Yemeni- German consultation meeting

SANA’A- Yemen and Germany held on Saturday a meeting of the annual informal consultations to assess the level of cooperation between the two countries and discuss mechanisms of supporting economic and service sectors in Yemen.

During the meeting, Yemeni and German officials discussed bilateral cooperation in fields of water, education, health, sanitation and institutional construction, food security and reforms as well as Germany’ future support to Yemen during 2011-2012, which includes the sectors of education, water, sanitation and reproductive health.

The meeting was co-chaired by Abdul-Karim al-Arhabi, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs & Minister Planning and International Cooperation, Michael Klor-Berchtold, German ambassador to Yemen and the head of the Middle East and North Africa Department in the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

In the meeting, al-Arhabi praised highly the level of four-decade cooperation between Yemen and Germany, hailing the German government’s positions to support development and stability in Yemen.

The senior Yemeni official also reviewed the overall challenges faced by Yemen, including political, economic, security and social sides, expressing Yemen’s aspiration to strengthen effective support from donors to help its government overcome the current challenges.

For his part, the German ambassador to Yemen confirmed his country’s government absolute support for Yemen’s stability and unity and its commitment to continue to make sustained efforts to contribute to the mobilization of International support to help Yemen overcome major challenges it faces.

The ambassador pointed out the German ambassador intends to continue its efforts to enhance the European Union’s support to Yemen, urging the European Commission to provide more support to Yemen.

He also highlighted that his country would continue to provide all aspects of the support to Yemen through bilateral cooperation and the donors.

For his part, the German official said the German government would seek to promote development support provided to Yemen, in particular in the sectors of water, health and sanitation, and support the financing of small and medium projects and biodiversity in a number of Yemeni areas.

Germany is an active partner of Yemen in the development sector through its 41-year contributions to supporting and strengthening the development plans in Yemen.

The annual German support to Yemen reached 45 million euros. For Yemen, Germany is the most prominent country of the traditional donors.
